DEBATE
NORTHAMPTON UNIVERSITY was a real success and
a special thanks goes to university staff who went to
a great deal of trouble to make the evening work.
The introductory Welcome speech by the Dean of Science
reminded us that North Hampton Uni Natural History Group
was founded by Charles Darwin in 1876, and the Baptist
Missionary William Carey was born there. The Debate was
to an almost packed lecture theatre which I will admit
surprised us, given that the first English Game at the
World cup was that day. The evolutionist was Dr Jeff Ollerton,
from the Botany Dept and the Debate Chairman was the BBC's,
Martin Heath.
* The most exciting highlight of the
evening was when John Mackay asked his
opponent the one scheduled question ".Richard Dawkins
was asked by Bill Moyers, NOW, 3 Dec 2004 PBS Is evolution
a theory, not a fact?
* To which Dawkins replied: "Evolution
has been observed. It's just that it
hasn't been observed while it's happening."
* Dr Ollerton, Can you do better than
Dawkins and provide any examples of
observed evolution, that do not presuppose evolution has
already happened?
* Dr Jeff Ollerton's reply was: "but
I don't understand the question", which
received much mirth and disbelief from students and lecturers
alike, plus a few boos.
* The next step is the obvious one "Because
if you can't we all need to
conclude that this is a world where all creatures are
known to only reproduce their own KIND as Genesis states
they were created to do!"
Sadly the BBC's request to have the evening recorded probably
will not work as the problems we had with the Lecture
Theatre sound and electronic systems that night were horrendous.
