Biggest thing defies cosmic theory, according to National Geographic and Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) News 11 January 2013. An international team of astronomers has discovered the largest structure so far found in the universe – a cluster of 73 quasars that is four billion light years across. Quasars tend to form large clusters, known as large quasar groups or LQGs, but this one exceeded all expectations according to current astrophysical models, which estimate the upper size limit for cosmic structures to be about 1.2 billion light-years.

Roger Clowes, an astronomer at University of Central Lancashire, UK, explained: “While it is difficult to fathom the scale of this LQG, we can say quite definitely it is the largest structure ever seen in the entire universe. This is hugely exciting – not least because it runs counter to our current understanding of the scale of the universe”. According to the RAS “The modern theory of cosmology is based on the work of Albert Einstein, and depends on the assumption of the Cosmological Principle”. The Cosmological Principle is “the assumption that the universe, when viewed at a sufficiently large scale, looks the same no matter where you are observing it from”. Clowes commented: “It could mean that our mathematical description of the universe has been oversimplified—and that would represent a serious difficulty and a serious increase in complexity”.

Editorial Comment: Clowes is correct – the current mathematical description of the universe is too simple, but not for reasons Big Bang astronomers believe. The real reason is the universe was created by a far greater intelligence than Einstein and all the current generation of astronomers put together. God is outside the universe, and He can place in it any sized structure He likes. Therefore, we should not be surprised when we find larger and more glorious structures as we study the universe. These genuinely awesome structures should remind us that the Heavens declare the Glory of God. Therefore, astronomers should humble themselves and take notice of what God said about the origin of the Universe. If they did, they may find answers to the questions the Big Bang theory and Cosmological Constant leave unanswered. (Ref. astronomy, cosmology, stars, physics)
