Rose Petal Raspberry Technology

Rose petal raspberry technology reported in ABC News in Science and SciencDaily 18 September 2013. A group of Australian scientists have developed a method of making particles consisting of clusters of tiny beads that could be used as a surface coating to trap and immobilise water droplets, as is observed to occur on rose petals. The research team replicated the properties of rose petals using micro- and nano-technology techniques to build up the particles. Andrew Telford of the University of Sydney explained: “We call them raspberry particles because they’re composed of spherical nanoparticles, held together in raspberry shaped structures. Raspberry particle films can be described as sticky tape for water droplets. They can trap tiny drops, preventing them from rolling off surfaces, even upside down”. Because the particles can hold water droplets they could be used to facilitate simple medical tests on free-standing droplets. This would enable a high turnover rate, without the need for expensive equipment, and therefore could be used in remote places.

By changing the components of the raspberry particles the researchers suggest they can create surface coatings with different properties, e.g. some substances could soak up water, others could remain dry. According to Telford, “This means we will be able to design a surface that does whatever you need it to do. We could also design a surface that stays dry forever, never needs cleaning or able to repel bacteria or even prevent mould and fungi growth. We could then tweak the same structure by changing its composition so it forces water to spread very quickly. This could be used on quick-dry walls and roofs which would also help to cool down houses. This can only be achieved with a very clear understanding of the science behind the chemical properties and construction of the surface”.

Editorial Comment: Telford’s comments about designing raspberry particles with different properties reminds us there is nothing mysterious or magical about creation, or recognising a created object. Creation occurs when information from a mind that understands the properties of matter and energy is applied by the owner of the mind to achieve a purpose that the matter and energy cannot plan for, or achieve by themselves without being manipulated by an outside intelligence. Many components of living organisms show the same properties as the raspberry particles, i.e. collections of smaller particles that together achieve a function that the components alone cannot, and that the components cannot plan ahead for. Therefore, don’t let anyone tell you that you cannot recognise a creation, or have evidence for a creator at work, when you look at living things.

Same point as always: If this team of intelligent scientists needed their understanding of chemical properties to design surfaces that manipulate water droplets, why would anyone think rose petals, which do the same thing, got it accidently by random evolution? No wonder the Bible says in Romans 1:20 the evidence is so clear and so easily understood that neither Telford or Dawkins or Attenborough, nor you or I, have any excuse for not glorifying the God who is Creator.
