Quote: Frances Hitching on Challenging Monarchy

"If the Bible told the truth, there was no way of peaceably challenging the monarchy in Britain, for sovereignty was supposed to descend from God to the King; but if the Bible could be shown to be inaccurate, particularly in respect to the key event of the Deluge, then the whole philosophical foundation on which the monarchy based its power would be shattered. That, at any rate, was the reasoning of a group of Whig lawyers and MPs, one of whom, Charles Lyell, published in 1830 his "Principles of Geology". ... Lyell had instant success, and was elected secretary and the president of the Geological Society."

From Frances Hitching "The World Atlas of Mysteries" Pan Books 1979 p10

Editorial Comment: Would you counsel Prince Charles to reinstate the Creator and creation into British schools?
